National Melanoma Awareness Project Home
Impact: Research

In 2004-2005, the Joel Myres Melanoma Awareness Project at UCI undertook an effort to better understand the impact of our educational outreach, in hopes of demonstrating a positive, lasting effect and learning how to improve our message. All protocols were approved by the University of California, Irvine Institutional Review Board (IRB) and all students and their parents were consented prior to participation.

We surveyed approximately 1200 of the students we taught immediately before, immediately after, and 3 months after educating them in their classrooms. Surveys included questions about epidemiologic factors and skin cancer/ sun protection knowledge, attitudes, and habits.  Initial data has been very exciting; the research results will be presented at the Western Medical Student Research Forum in Carmel, CA on February 5, 2006 and at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting in San Francisco, CA on March 3-7, 2006.
